The Lucida 3D Laser Scanner, the system designed specifically by Factum Arte to record the surface of paintings and low-relief objects, has been used to scan Henry Hudson's series of large plasticine paintings "The Rise and Fall of Young Sen". It is the first time that Lucida has been used to record contemporary artworks in an artist's studio, in tandem with the paintings being made.It was clear from the beginning of the project that the rich and complex texture of Hudson's works would be especially interesting when scanned in three dimensions. From the high resolution files of the surface of the 10 paintings is possible to produce, through digital mediation, to find new material from the recording of the original works. Research is now being done, in collaboration with the artist, to further the development of these artworks through different materialization techniques. A combination of traditional crafts, digital technology, and fabrication has gone hand-by-hand throughout the whole process.
