Factum Arte and Kaparos Fine Art Foundry worked with artist Eilís O'Connell on the production of her most recent public installation. Commissioned from IPUT for the newly redeveloped Wilton Park in Dublin, Dipping the Other Wing is a mirror-polished stainless steel sculpture installed in Mary Lavin Place: the first public space in Ireland dedicated to a woman, Irish writer Mary Lavin (1912-1996). Lavin lived at Wilton Place and described the park in her short story One Evening (1967), from which O'Connell took inspiration to create an abstract biomorphic form.
Kaparos used Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), an innovative method in metal production, to 3D-print the sculpture in sections using stainless steel filament – cutting both production times and material waste compared to other manufacturing processes. The sections were welded together and the sculpture was polished to a mirror-like surface, one of Kaparos' specialties.
Dipping the Other Wing was unveiled at Wilton Park in Dublin in November 2024.
