The solo show 'Viewfinder. A Way of Seeing', until July 15th 2024 at Serrería Belga in Madrid, is a tribute to Ukrainian photographer Boris Savelev, who was honoured with the PHotoESPAÑA Award 2024 on May 27th. This is a very special moment for us because a significant portion of Boris Savelev's career has been shaped by a strong collaboration with Factum Arte.
Savelev places great importance on the materiality of the image capture and the printed output. The camera and lens are critical, the film or sensor are analysed with forensic attention to detail, and the prints must have the specific qualities of his memory of the moment the image was made. complexity and subtle surface qualities drew him to traditional printing processes, especially pigment transfer printing. With the arrival of digital printing, his obsession with shadow detail led to the need for a special flatbed printer capable of working in layers and using pigments, literally building the image like a painter works with their canvas. This unique method was developed for him by Factum Arte. The process is time-consuming, but it allows for control of both tone and colour, deposited onto traditional gesso surfaces and finished with natural wax.
The exhibition was featured on El País, El Confidencial and The Guardian
