For me, as a photographer, when I look back at the images I have made, there are certain decisive moments. Photography is a process of selection and there are subtle changes in the way I observe and frame the world around me. These preferences are influenced by time, place, camera and film. The connections I make have their own poetic resonance. Some may be obvious and explicit. Others are private and subjective.

Durante la primavera de 2022, con la ayuda de su amigo y colaborador Adam Lowe (director de Factum Arte y fundador de la Fundación Factum), Boris y su esposa Natalia se mudaron a Madrid, donde el artista estuvo trabajando en la producción de estos portfolios. 

Las fotografías reunidas en esta obra, revelan diversos aspectos del mundo tamizados por la mirada perspicaz de Boris Savelev y definidos por el uso concienzudo de su cámara. Examinadas en conjunto, estas imágenes nos ofrecen una visión del dramáticamente cambiante del mundo en que habitamos.

Las primeras imágenes se remontan a 1974 y muestran el mundo de la Unión Soviética de aquel entonces, envuelto en un extenuante tedio de espera con cigarrillos y alcohol, al que contraponen momentos puntuales de intensidad y calor humano. A medida que pasan los años, estos portafolios nos muestran los cambios extraordinarios sucedidos entre 1988 y el comienzo de los años 2000, cuando Boris estuvo viajando libremente y exponiendo en Rusia, EEUU, Alemania, España e Inglaterra.
Las imágenes más recientes, en su mayoría tomadas en el barrio de su infancia en Czernowitz (Ucrania), evocan una amabilidad insólita en el arte contemporáneo. Muestran un mundo en el que la luz proyecta magia tanto en las personas retratadas como en el entorno que las envuelve. Las fotos están repletas de posibilidades a la vez que impregnadas de cotidianidad con que se desarrolla la vida actual en Ucrania.

El juego completo se compone de 96 imágenes, divididas en 8 portafolios, cada uno presentado en un estuche que contiene 12 imágenes. Las dimensiones exteriores del set son 52 x 41 x 13 cm.
Todas las piezas han sido seleccionadas, impresas y montadas por Boris Savelev desde que llegó a España el año pasado. Estas muestran su visión del entorno desde 1974 hasta 2021. Cada carpeta contiene un texto explicativo del artista.

Las imágenes son C-Prints en papel Fujicolor RC, montadas en Canson 400 gm, con lámina seca de montaje MasterMount. Los formatos son cuadrados (30x30cm) o rectangulares (25x38cm). Tanto el estuche como las carpetas que contienen las imágenes han sido elaboradas por Rob Hadrill en Book Works, Londres.

I joined the photo club Novator in Moscow in 1974. This period was very exciting. I found a great subject in the people of the Soviet Union. I found a voice through the images I took and shared. - Boris Savelev

I left Novator and started working with a Russian Iskra camera, but I also got my first German Leica camera. I continued working in black and white, recording the street life in Czernowitz [Chernivtsi], Moscow, and St. Petersburg. - Boris Savelev

The series "Secret City" was taken on East German 6X6 color Orwachrome film. Thomas Neurath, the British publisher, came to Moscow as Perestroika started to lift the Iron Curtain. He published the book Secret City, Photographs from the USSR, Boris Savelev (London: Thames & Hudson, 1988), the first book of an “unofficial" photographer allowed to be published outside the Soviet Union. - Boris Savelev

After the subdued colors of Orwachrome the discovery of Kodachrome was a significant moment of change, both in terms of the intensity of color but also in terms of the details I could capture in the shadows. - Boris Savelev

I worked behind the scenes at the Bolshoy Ballet for two years. This was a difficult time in Russia and the images capture the amazing grace and physicality of the dancers and the sense of decay all around them. - Boris Savelev

Czernowitz [Chernivtsi, Ukraine], is my home. I was born there. I have lived there full-time since 2010. These images are a selection from my ongoing documentation of a beautiful city that is an expression of the complexity of the relationship between the power blocks that control Europe. - Boris Savelev
