Tschabalala Self collaborated with Factum Arte on two sculptures for her solo show 'Home Body' at Pilar Corrias Gallery in London (October 6 - December 17, 2022). The exhibition was connected to Seated (2022), Self’s first public sculpture that has been commissioned by Avant Arte.
"Two life-sized bronze figures – a material synonymous with monuments of the important and mighty – sit on chairs, becoming part of the furniture. Surrounded by large-scale paintings on paper and canvas, the abstracted figures form props for Self’s stage, where the home and the body can only be one" (from Pilar Corrias Gallery's website). Factum Arte's 3D sculptor Irene Gaumé worked on rematerialising two drawings by the artist as three-dimensional pieces. The smaller-scale 3D-printed models were painted by the artist, aiming at incorporating the painted traces left by the brush on the surface of the final bronze sculptures. After scanning the two maquettes using photogrammetry, a custom-made paint brush texture was created and mapped over the 3D model, which was scaled to the final size and sent to Kaparos Foundry in Greece for casting.
Mediating the 2D nature of Tschabalala's drawing into a physical three-dimensional piece also meant incorporating part of Tschabalala's visual language into the final result. Irene and the artist worked side by side to transform her ideas and develop a sculptural identity that builds on her previous works.
