Six Dioramas for Zayed National Museum

As part of the gallery Through Our Nature, Factum Arte was commissioned to design and produce six dioramas that explore the formation and use of natural resources in the United Arab Emirates. Each installation occupies a dedicated showcase within the gallery and combines scientific research with artistic interpretation to offer a clear, engaging view of the region’s geological, hydrological and material history.

The dioramas examine processes that shaped the UAE over millions of years—from ancient oceans and tectonic shifts to the origins of minerals, aquifers and early technologies. Together, they trace a narrative that moves from deep time to human innovation, highlighting both natural phenomena and historical methods of resource utilisation. Scientific accuracy was essential throughout, together with the ambition to create visually compelling environments that communicate complex ideas with clarity.

The extensive research informed every stage of the creative process. The challenge was not only to present reliable scientific information but also to shape it into displays that are works of art—carefully composed “cabinets of wonders” that encourage visitors to look closely, understand connections and engage with the museum’s educational aims.

Each diorama was designed specifically for its assigned showcase by Adam Lowe, resulting in six distinct environments, each with its own narrative, materials and technical solutions.
