Hand-tufting

The hand tufting technique, developed in the 1930s, combines the ancient craft of weaving with modern technology (tufting gun). A canvas is stretched over a loom and the threads are applied with incredible precision using a small hand-held gun which shoots the yarn through the back to the front of the canvas. The gun tufting technique offers a large range of depth and allows for more accurate detailing and control over small surfaces. A carving technique can be applied that consists of sculpting the wool and creating textures within the woven rug.

Factum Arte has collaborated with renowned artists such as Grayson Perry and Alexandre Arrechea to create beautiful, hand-tufted masterpieces. These tapestries are hand-tufted at La Alpujarreña (ALP), one of the oldest factories in Europe with over one hundred years of experience in hand-crafted textiles manufacturing and they continue to display the potential of combining technologies and traditional crafts.
