Los Carpinteros


The art collective Los Carpinteros was formed at the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana in 1992 by Cuban artists Marco Castillo (1971), Dabogerto Rodriguez (1969) and Alexandre Arrechea (1970), who left the group in 2003. In 1994, they adopted the name Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters), evoking notions of craftsmanship and challenging the concept of single authorship.

Embedded in the theories of conceptualism, formalism and activism, their creations combine elements of architecture, design and sculpture to explore the unpredicted and humorous interactions of politics, society and art. Their constructions advance a language of contradiction and transformation of binary dichotomies such as the utilitarian and the useless and form and function.

Los Carpinteros live and work between La Habana and Madrid.
